Press Release
Horse Owners Should be Wary of "Free" Wood Chips
Kevin H. Kline, PhDProfessor of Animal SciencesUniversity of Illinois
Horse owners looking for an inexpensive source of stall bedding or arena footing are well-advised to avoid
free wood chips that may be offered to farms and townships near wooded areas being cleared for home
construction and power lines. The reason for concern is that many wooded areas being cut, especially
along the Illinois/Wisconsin border, contain significant numbers of black walnut trees known to be
very toxic to horses. Wood chips or shavings containing as little as 5 percent black walnut have
been found to cause laminitis (founder), which can result in debilitation or death of the horse.
Recent reports have suggested that greater than normal cutting and chipping of trees for power line
installation is occurring in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin this summer, so horse owners
in this region should not be tempted to use these potentially dangerous wood products anywhere near
their animals. The potential for harm is not limited to this region, so due caution should always be
exercised whenever wood products are used for horse bedding or arena flooring. Horse owners should
obtain wood shavings or chips that are guaranteed to be free of toxic black walnut.
Consumer Alert
Horse Owners Should Be Wary Of "WOOD PELLETS" for bedding horse
Wood Pellets are made for heating not bedding horses. Some Wood Pellets are made from hard woods which may be
very toxic, dangerous and even deadly for horses. Even some Softwood Pellets may have binders and other chemicals
to enhance combustion and binding. Some Wood Pellets are made from wood recycling projects where there is no way
of knowing what chemicals were in the wood or what wood species are in the Wood Pellets.
